From Astronaut-Hero To Space-Trucker: The Human Spin on Space Commercialization
Thu, 17 May 2012 10:31:41 GMT The cast of “Alien,” Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi blockbuster, may actually be more akin to future space-farers than our citizen heroes from NASA's Apollo era. After all, the film presents a view of space travel that is based as much on economics as wanderlust and this is arguably as it should be. |

Celebrity Entrepreneurs on the Rise?
Wed, 16 May 2012 22:50:24 GMT Whereas once upon a time a celebrity lending his or her recognition to further a product was called a sell-out, today getting behind a product and using one’s fame to help it along is called entrepreneurship. And rightly so. The kind of active investment we’re seeing from celebrities like 50 Cent, Ashton Kutcher, Sean Combs and Leonardo DiCaprio is marked by market research, personal engagement in the product and an ownership stake. Sure, a lot of these glitzy moguls-in-the-making have business managers and research teams, but compare their entrepreneurial endeavors to what they could be doing – renting out their likenesses to underwear ads – and you’ve got to admit they are a little bit more engaged. |

Mitt Romney's Personal Property Ups and Downs
Wed, 16 May 2012 18:26:30 GMT Mitt and Ann Romney have made big changes in their real estate holdings since 2008. For starters, the couple sold their longtime family home in Belmont, Mass. They had bought the colonial, which sat on 2.5 acres and was located just a few doors down from Belmont Hill School, the private day school attended by all five of their sons, for $1.25 million in 1989, five years after Romney helped found Bain Capital. The 7-bedroom colonial, which has a pool and tennis court, was sold for $3.5 million in 2009. All the kids long gone and out on their own, Mitt and Ann downsized, paying $895,000 a year later for a two-bedroom townhouse condominium in Belmont. |

The New Yorker Covers You Were Never Meant To See (And Some You Already Did)
Wed, 16 May 2012 18:08:12 GMT People often tell me that they love the covers of The New Yorker. They offer this to me because I’m a New Yorker cartoonist. I adore my job, but no matter what job you have and no matter how much you love it, there is always another ring to try to catch. For many if not most cartoonists, the next hurdle is to have a cover. The New Yorker covers are magical and carry a certain mystery, and if you are a New Yorker cartoonist, having a drawing on the cover is a rather large feather in your cap. |

Wed, 16 May 2012 17:14:56 GMT Tom Cruise is number 9 on Forbes Celebrity 100 List this week, and Manny Pacquiao is number thirty-three. However, a little incident here in Los Angeles, where Pacquaio lives and trains, reminds me of the controversy ignited by Cruise in 2005. |

| Word of the day |
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 17, 2012 is:
maffick \MAF-ik\ verb
: to celebrate with boisterous rejoicing and hilarious behavior
Examples:
Fans mafficked for hours outside the stadium, celebrating the team's dramatic victory in the division championship.
"In half an hour, after the mildest of mafficking, the last visitors of the exhibition's last day had gone out of the gates and the staff began their final acts of closing up shop." From an article in The Guardian (London), October 1, 2011
Did you know?
"Maffick" is an alteration of Mafeking Night, the British celebration of the lifting of the siege of a British military outpost during the South African War at the town of Mafikeng (also spelled Mafeking) on May 17, 1900. The South African War was fought between the British and the Afrikaners, who were Dutch and Huguenot settlers originally called Boers, over the right to govern frontier territories. Though the war did not end until 1902, the lifting of the siege of Mafikeng was a significant victory for the British because they held out against a larger Afrikaner force for 217 days until reinforcements could arrive. The rejoicing in British cities on news of the rescue produced "maffick," a word that was popular for a while, especially in journalistic writing, but is now relatively uncommon.
